Walk past a hundred backyard structures and you will notice that a handful of them look permanent while the rest look assembled. The difference is almost never the roof or the finish. It is the frame, and specifically how the pieces of that frame meet each other.
A timber frame pavilion is defined by that meeting point. Instead of relying on steel plates and screws to hold posts and beams together, the timbers are cut to interlock, then locked in place. The result carries load differently, ages differently and reads differently from the yard.

What a Timber Frame Pavilion Actually Is
A timber frame pavilion is a freestanding, solid-roofed outdoor structure built from heavy sawn timbers joined with traditional woodworking joints rather than mechanical connectors. The frame itself carries the load, so there is no hidden stud wall or steel skeleton doing the real work.
The visible frame is the structure. That is why the timbers are large, why the joints are exposed, and why the whole thing looks the way it does from underneath.
How It Differs From a Pergola
The distinction that matters most is the roof. A pergola has open rafters and gives you dappled shade, while a pavilion has a solid, pitched, weathertight roof and gives you a dry space underneath.
That single difference drives everything else. Solid roofs mean real snow and wind loads, which means deeper beams, closer post spacing and substantially more concrete in the ground. It is why a pavilion of the same footprint typically costs two to three times what a pergola does.
How It Differs From a Stick-Built Gazebo

Some suppliers use structural screws or concealed steel plates and still call the result a timber frame. That can be perfectly sound engineering, but it is a different product and should be priced as one. Ask directly how the joints are secured and whether any steel is concealed inside them.
Green Timber Versus Kiln Dried
Timber frames are commonly built from green timber, meaning wood that has not been dried before cutting. Green timber cuts cleanly and is less expensive, but it will check and season in place, developing surface cracks along the grain and shrinking slightly across its width over the first few years.
Kiln-dried or air-dried timber moves far less and holds tight joints, but it costs more and is harder to source in large sections. Neither is a defect. What matters is that you know which you are getting, because a client expecting a flawless surface who receives a green frame will be disappointed by a completely normal process.
Choosing Your Timber Species
Species affects appearance, durability, weight and price roughly in that order of visibility, though durability is what determines how the structure looks in fifteen years.

Ask what grade you are getting alongside the species. A select structural grade Douglas fir and a number two grade Douglas fir look noticeably different once the frame is standing.
Weight Classes Change the Price More Than Anything Else
Most suppliers organise their range by the section size of the timbers, and this is the variable that moves a quote the most.
Heavy timber frames use large sections, commonly 200mm by 200mm posts and beams or larger, and carry the visual mass people usually picture when they think of a pavilion. Light timber ranges use smaller sections, often around 150mm by 150mm, with tighter post spacing to compensate.

Footprint decisions are easier when you start from the furniture rather than from a round number.

Full slabs work well when you want a finished floor surface and the pavilion is your primary outdoor living area. Helical piles are increasingly used where excavation is difficult or the soil is poor.
Whichever route you take, insist on standoff post bases rather than posts set directly onto or into concrete. Timber sitting in trapped moisture will fail from the bottom up long before anything else in the structure does.
Kit, Custom or Full Service
Suppliers generally sell in three ways, and the right choice depends on your skills, your access and your timeline.
Precut kits arrive with joinery already cut, numbered and ready to assemble, which suits capable DIY builders with help and lifting equipment available. Custom frames are designed to your dimensions and site, cost more and take longer, but they solve awkward sites and specific design goals. Full-service builds include design, permitting, foundations and installation, and are the only realistic option for most people on larger frames.
Be honest about the raise. Timber frames are heavy, and lifting a bent into place is not a two-person job. Factor in equipment hire and helpers before you assume a kit is the cheaper route.
Cold Climate Builds Need a Different Specification
Snow load is the variable that reshapes a pavilion design more than any other, because snow does not run off. It accumulates, it drifts unevenly, and wet spring snow is dramatically heavier than the dry powder people picture.
That changes beam depth, rafter spacing, post sizing and footing depth all at once. A model that performs well in a mild region can be structurally inadequate a few hundred kilometres north, even though the drawings look identical.
